Computer Supported Collaborative Learning for
Training and Development
Brandon Hall Research discusses Collaborative Learning: “Collaboration
sounds like a positive idea. It seems friendly, helpful, and sociable.
So, the term “collaborative learning” should be equally appealing
— even more so when we throw technology into the mix. What’s
not to like about using technology to support collaborative learning?
A thorough review of the literature on using computers to support collaborative
learning shows that reality is more complicated. Facilitating successful
computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) is neither easy nor simple.
It can be full of pitfalls, and, to succeed, CSCL requires careful design
and structure. Successfully implementing CSCL requires careful planning,
preparation, and effort on the part of both students and teachers. "Computer-Based
Collaborative Learning for Training and Development: Research and Practice"
provides a summary of the existing research about collaboration in learning.”

Tech of All Trades
According to Certification Magazine: “Regardless of their exact career
direction and various backgrounds, IT professionals should acquire certain
jack-of-all-trades-type certifications if they are the IT point man of an
SMB. Through experts, surveys and IT professionals working on the ground
level, it’s clear being an IT jack-of-all-trades goes beyond just
certifications — there are a host of processes and practices that
can consistently help a one-man IT operation. However, it all has to start
somewhere, and certifications are a sure way to instant credibility.”

Upward Mobility in IT: Business Skills for the Technical Professional
Certification Magazine explains: “Advancements in outsourcing, global
commerce and technology indicate that the economic landscape is shifting.
In order to change with it, companies are increasingly emphasizing the need
for strong business skills — otherwise known as soft skills, management
skills or business acumen.
Expert knowledge is a prized possession in the current professional environment.
Without it, organizations lack the ability to innovate and compete in the
global marketplace. But in today’s business world, deep technical
or specialized knowledge is not enough — especially for those moving
up the corporate ladder. IT professionals must complement this knowledge
with business acumen — or general knowledge of the “rules of
engagement” in business — and the ability to apply that knowledge
to maneuver through the business environment.”

Training Camp Goes Mac, Prometric Goes Global
Certification Magazine describes a new course from Training Camp: “Nowadays,
an idle business is a dying business. Companies need to constantly try
to broaden their customer base, especially in the tech industry, to stay
ahead of the curve. Sometimes this means drastic changes, but more often
it’s something right under an organization’s nose that can
provide it with a growth burst.
Training Camp, a provider of accelerated IT training programs, has introduced
an Apple Certified Help Desk Specialist (ACHDS) camp. The program lasts
three days and helps professionals deepen their knowledge of Mac OS X
and develop their ability to service and troubleshoot the operating system
for end users.”

Soft Skills Simulations: A
New Kind of Learning
CLO Magazine describes the challenges behind teaching soft skills: “Teaching
employees to crunch numbers or write press releases is relatively straightforward,
but how do you teach them to be team players? While computer-based learning
simulations have traditionally been used to illustrate the technical skills
of a specific job role, now the corporate world is starting to employ
them to practice and apply soft skills.
“When you’re training somebody on how to use machinery, you
can give them diagrams [and] manuals,” said Ralph Vacca, co-founder
and chief learning architect at Kognito Interactive, a learning company
that creates Web-based simulations and e-learning programs.
“[But] when it comes to soft skills; it’s not step-by-step.
The information that’s delivered in the classroom is even more abstract.
Take the concept of emotional intelligence, for example. Now people can
regurgitate this information if you give them a knowledge exam, but in
terms of being able to apply emotional intelligence concepts when actually
dealing with people and managing people, it’s just not happening.”
Currently, the predominant training model is that of the trainer in the
classroom, but that doesn’t always work as well with soft skill
development. That’s where simulations come in.”

Video Expands Role In Training, Collaboration
ComputerWorld explains: “While some companies are struggling to keep
employees from watching online YouTube videos in the office, others are
turning to video technology to improve internal training and collaboration,
and to expand external marketing programs.
One approach is for businesses to post internally created videos on YouTube
and other social networking sites to market themselves and their wares.
But some companies, like Philadelphia-based Rohm and Haas Co., are making
a bigger investment. The manufacturer of specialty chemicals, construction
materials and other products later this month will launch what it calls
a corporate YouTube site for its 15,000 employees around the world.”

IT
career paths you never dreamed of
ComputerWorld highlights career paths: “Think you want to be a CIO

officer or chief process officer. Software developers eager to advance
should consider looking for product architect roles. Network and security
administrators may want to start looking for positions as electronic privacy
specialists. If business analytics is your area of expertise, your next
promotion might be to the job of information architect.
And one more thing: Don't expect to be part of an IT department. As a
21st century technology professional, your future -- and most likely your

be scrubbed of any hint of computers, databases, software development

eLearning:
An Essential Piece of the Learning Puzzle
TrainingOutsourcing.com discusses eLearning: “We’ve all heard
the term eLearning. It seems to be one of the “hot topics”
or new buzz words in today’s landscape of corporate
training programs. In 2006, 53 percent of all corporate training involved
some form of eLearning (Bersin Associates, 2007). Even
universities—stalwarts of traditional classroom learning—have
jumped on the bandwagon, with 96 percent of universities
with more than 15,000 students offering some type of online class (http://www.sloanc.org/publications/survey/survey06.asp,
The

it affect you?”

A world-class symphony is comprised of more than a hundred musicians who

the conductor is to ensure the whole is greater than the sum of its many

various elements of enterprise learning programs in a constantly changing
business environment. And like the conductors, they must enable the workforce
to harmoniously adapt to radical transitions brought on by shifting market
conditions, competitive challenges, organizational restructuring from
mergers and acquisitions or new business opportunities. Join us at the
Spring 2008 CLO Symposium, as we focus on the crucial role of the chief
learning officer in successfully orchestrating change within the organization.
